Located in Arusha National Park, Mount Meru provides stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and a challenging ascent that rewards climbers with panoramic views and a sense of accomplishment. Here’s everything you need to know about trekking Mount Meru.

The trekking journey

The main route to the summit of Mount Meru is the Momella Route, which offers a scenic and rewarding climb over several days.

Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

The trek begins at Momella Gate (1,500 meters) and ascends through lush rainforest teeming with wildlife. Hikers might encounter giraffes, buffalo, and various bird species. The trail climbs steadily to Miriakamba Hut (2,514 meters), providing a comfortable rest spot for the night.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

The second day involves a steeper ascent through forest and moorland, leading to Saddle Hut (3,570 meters). Along the way, trekkers enjoy breathtaking views of the Meru Crater and the ash cone. Upon reaching Saddle Hut, an optional afternoon hike to Little Meru (3,820 meters) offers acclimatization and stunning vistas.

Day 3: Saddle Hut to Summit (Socialist Peak) to Miriakamba Hut

Summit day begins early, with a pre-dawn trek to Socialist Peak (4,566 meters). The trail is steep and challenging, passing Rhino Point (3,800 meters) and traversing rocky ridges. Reaching the summit at sunrise offers spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscapes. After celebrating the summit, trekkers descend back to Saddle Hut for a brief rest before continuing to Miriakamba Hut.

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate

The final day involves a leisurely descent through the rainforest to Momella Gate, where the trek concludes. This day allows for reflection on the journey and the diverse ecosystems experienced along the way.

What to expect

Rainforest Zone

The trek starts in the dense rainforest, home to abundant wildlife including monkeys, antelope, and various bird species. The lush greenery and vibrant ecosystem provide an enchanting start to the adventure.

Moorland Zone

As you ascend, the forest gives way to heath and moorland, characterized by giant heathers and scenic vistas. This zone offers expansive views and the chance to spot wildlife in more open terrain.

Alpine Desert Zone

Near the summit, the landscape transforms into a rocky alpine desert. The air is thinner, and the temperatures drop, making the final ascent more challenging but immensely rewarding. The stark, rugged beauty of this zone is a highlight of the trek.
